Abstract

For Paolo Sarpi, the political importance of History lies in its addressing his contemporaries to help them solve the problems of the present. In his writings, from Istoria dell’Interdetto to "Trattato di pace et accommodamento", he draws upon materials from the archives of the Serenissima, reshaping and reorganising them in order to convey the impression of an objective report. His narratives deploy a variety of forms and ways of citing these documents, which enable the text to push the reader in the direction of the author’s suggested interpretation.
