Over the past century nursing has developed into a profession with a distinct scientific foundation. We can be particularly proud of recent developments in nursing education. The science of nursing will however never stagnate and nursing today and tomorrow will have to keep up with many more changes and adaptations. Aspects to which the profession will need to direct its attention include continuous improvements in salaries, professional status, nursing as an autonomous science, decentralisation of nursing and the overloading of the basic course with particular reference to hours of practice.
