Moment tensor inversion by fitting surface waves for the m 5.5 earthquake in Kraljevo
Abstract
This paper focuses on the inversion of seismic data from the Kraljevo earthquake to determine the source parameters and provide a comparison with classical methods. Understanding the earthquake source is critical for seismic hazard assessment and contributes to refining existing models. The inversion was performed using the Grond software, using seismic waveform data from the seismic stations located in the range of 900 km from the epicenter to resolve the moment tensor and other key source parameters: depth, magnitude, etc. The results for the moment tensor solution were compared with the one obtained from traditional (P-wave first-motion polarity) method as well as the source parameters were compared with findings from prior studies, offering insights into the robustness of the inversion approach. This comparison helps assess the reliability of different techniques in earthquake source analysis, enhancing our understanding of seismic events and their broader implications for regional tectonics.
