From Dove mi Trovo to Whereabouts: Jhumpa Lahiri and autotranslation
Abstract
This article discusses about self-translation, focusing on the writer Jhumpa Lahiri, as the selftranslator of Dove mi Trovo (2018) – a work written by the author in Italian and translated by herself into English, whose publication was entitled Whereabouts (2021a). The discussion highlights this particularity that covers this practice of Lahiri, that is, the fact that the referred self-translation took place from the Italian language to the English language, although the author, being English, of Indian descent and naturalized North American, has for many years written exclusively in English. Considering this inverse configuration and based on Lahiri’s own reflections on self-translation, this article aims to understand how the author perceives her practice.
