Abstract

Jiménez de Rada and López de Ayala, both of whom had a more or less close association with Toledo, narrated the history of the city and its organisation post-1085, but with notable distortions. The reasons for these are hard to comprehend other than as a desire of the authors to gloss over certain aspects of the town’s history. Of these the most noteworthy was the lasting arabisation of a large part, if not most, of the city’s Christian population, known as «Mozarabes» following its reconquest and the departure of almost all its Muslim inhabitants.
