Objective: report the experience of breastfeeding at the newborn’s first time of life in a private hospital in Porto Alegre, RS, addressing its advantages and the difficulties into the adoption of this approach. Methodology: It reports the nurses’ experience at delivery care at the obstetrical center. Results: The experience made it possible to give the thematic of early breastfeeding an insight, pointing out this approach at the delivery room. It was shown that this measure is not effectively implemented, being postponed to the post-delivery room. There is prevalence of caesareans in hospitals hindering the promotion of the breastfeeding practice at delivery and birth. Another thing that limits that practice is the assistance attached to the standards, institutional rules, and the culture of biomedical competence. Conclusion: Highlight that hospitals need to develop policies to promote and protect the breastfeeding practice
