Formulaic expressions or set phrases are important linguistic constituents of a nation’s vocabulary and culture. These language units/expressions, which have become stabilised over a long period of time, also become functional in expressing a situation in an economy of words elegantly, rather than using more than one word or sentence. In order describe events and situations, people sometimes resort to express their feelings and thoughts in formulaic expressions. Among these, “prayer” (alkış) and “curse” (kargış) are significant indicators of vocabulary and culture. This study titled “An Analysis on the Curses Used in the Dialects of Iğdır province,” focuses on 156 curses extracted from the texts collected from the central district of Iğdır and its other 3 districts were examined. 156 curses are scrutinised in terms of meaning which are provided with their explanations. The forms and meanings of the formulaic expressions used in the local dialect are also given. These curses used in the dialect of the district are also categorised and classified under sub-headings according to their meanings.
