The language used by diasporas makes a link between settlements and the homeland. Language is foundational and about one’s identity. Being a common practice that distinguishes, it carries a set of values and norms. It is used out of its place of origin by multilingual individuals who, because of this, are also mediators in the host societies. Diaspora languages compete with other languages and community schools and presses are instrumental in disseminating it and controlling its transmission. Their loss as a communication tool does not so much imply assimilation of the group as the increased weight of the symbolic investment in them by the communities and individuals.
