The article is devoted to the study of cartographic sources related to the history of Tatar settlements in Kazan. Based on the analysis of four handwritten maps from the collection of N. I. Lobachevsky Scientific Library at Kazan Federal University, we reveal the boundaries of territories and objects in both the Old Tatar and the New Tatar Quarters throughout the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. We examine the dynamics of development of the separated Tatar part of the city, the features of its confessional structure through the example of mosques and churches, the transformation of the settlement area of Tatars, and their interaction with the areas surrounding the quarters. We consider the cartographic materials in terms of their informativeness and reliability. Additionally, we have compares data contained in plans and maps from various periods depicting specific objects of the settlements. Finally, we provide both external and internal critical considerations on the sources used.
