Defects play an important role in the pinning of domain walls (DW) in ferroelectric materials but the underlying mechanism is still elusive. Here, the authors report on the dynamic interaction between electronic defects and DWs in BiFeO3 resulting not only in pinning but also affecting the DW conductivity.
