The Effect of the Non-violent Resistance Program for the Parents of Children with Violent Behaviors
Abstract
The ‘’Non-violent Resistance’’ program was developed for parents, teachers and caregivers who have children and adolescents with behavior that includes violence and aggression. It is a new educational model that aims to help parents cope effectively with their mutual escalating interactions with their children. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of the "Nonviolent Resistance" parent program which is applied to parents with children with violent behaviors on the violence and aggression behaviors seen in primary education students, the stresses experienced by parents, the feelings of inadequacy they perceive, levels of support they feel. The data of the study were obtained through the 'Family Evaluation Scale’, Parenting Stres Index and 'Questionnaire of Subjective Disturbance Units' which were applied to the parents in the experimental and control groups. These scales were applied to the parents of the experimental and control groups as pretest, posttest and follow-up measurements. When the findings were examined, it was seen that the programs applied to parents created changes in family relations, reduced the violence and aggressive behaviors seen in children, reduced parents' stress and disability feelings significantly and increased support levels they perceive. Based on these results, it is suggested that the Non-Violent Resistance program should be implemented within the framework of cooperation with the parents in the educational environment and in other institutions providing services for children and adolescents.
