Marginality and homoeroticism in Marcelino Freire's narratives

Abstract

Marcelino Freire's narratives are part of the vast Brazilian literary production of today. It is possible to identify in the characters, environments and plots, of the Pernambuco's author, recurrent stylistic traits such as the theme of marginality and homoeroticism. It becomes necessary to establish an analysis of such traits, in an articulated way, based on a comparison between literary and theoretical texts. Thus, in this work, we propose, based on the literary analysis of Marcelino Freire's narratives, to establish an articulation between marginal literature and the notions of homoeroticism. For analysis, we highlight the short stories “A volta de Carmen Miranda”, from the book BaléRalé (2003), and “Coração”, from the book Contos Negreiros (2015), as well as the novel Nossos Ossos (2013). We use a comparative analysis between the author's literary texts and, therefore, we examine the concepts of marginal and peripheral literature from the texts of Rejane Pivetta de Oliveira (2011), Karl Erik Schøllhammer (2009), Jaime Ginzburg (2012), Flora Süssekind (2005). Likewise, we return to the elements of studies on homoeroticism from the reading of Jurandir Freire Costa (1992) and David William Foster (2019). In the end, we intend to consolidate, using the comparative literary analysis, the relationship between marginality and homoeroticism in Marcelino Freire's narratives, as well as a possible articulation for readings of contemporary Brazilian literature.
