An Interdisciplinary Experience of Reading Promotion at the UEM School of Arts and Communication
Abstract
The main aim of this article is to describe an experience carried out in the Universidad Europea de Madrid with Communication students from the following courses: Communication skills and Journalistic Documentation and Research. The innovation lies not only in the aim of the activity – reading promotion in higher education – but also in the methodology and format used to carry it out – a radio program about literature created by the students themselves – and finally in the way of assessing the different exercises carried out. The Bolonia system insists on concepts like having students develop competences, rather than on content acquisition; and also on the teaching process employed. Thus, teachers should try to avoid excessive resource to lectures and rather do exercises in which students can develop the different skills that are currently required by employers. For this reason, a radio program about literature was carried out in order to develop autonomous teamwork, following a process that went from planning and documentation to test and execution. In this way, students become aware of the responsibilities involved doing work for others, while at the same time enjoying the creative aspect of working with different channels, reading texts and making comments in different languages (international students). The work of students on a real radio program engages them and makes them act like real, responsible professionals.
