François Cheng and Ling Xi are two migrant writers born in China who live in France and have chosen to write in French. They belong to different generations of writers and illustrate the transculturation of the French literary field. Their works are to a large extent influenced by their experience of migration and favor questions of identity: the main characters in their texts are situated in-between cultures, languages and sexes and suggest different strategies to deal with identity problems linked (not only) to their migrant condition. While François Cheng’s work is placed under the sign of reconciliation, Ling Xi, whose writing is more subversive, suggests the maintenance of the tensions and wants to describe what she calls the “third half”.
