A didactic alternative to improve the learning of English for specific purposes integrating undergraduate and postgraduate education

Background: the process of initial and permanent training of medical professionals requires the development of skills to communicate in the English language. However, insufficiencies related to the command of oral communication skills prevail.Objective: to assess a didactic alternative to improve the learning of English for specific purposes integrating undergraduate and postgraduate education at work, in the Medicine major of the "Dr. Zoilo Enrique Marinello Vidaurreta” Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas.Methods: an intervention study was carried out with the application of the didactic alternative, reported in the previous lines, with a sample of 27 students from the Medicine major and 25 postgraduates of the course English for Medical Practice (doctors specialized in Family Medicine), in the academic year 2018-2019.Results: after applying the didactic alternative, it was observed that the majority of the students (12, 44,4 %) and postgraduates (11, 44 %) obtained grades of four points, followed by the students (10, 37,3 %) and postgraduates (9, 36 %) with grades of five. Mass and spontaneous participation was achieved in ward rounds carried out in the English language at the department of gynecology.Conclusions: the application of the didactic alternative where study and work were linked in the education-at-work teaching type and the link of undergraduate and postgraduate studies were novel elements in the obtaining of favorable results.
