This paper aims at elucidating the political implications of memory in the renewal of the past and the disputes for the legitimation of the present. The memories about the period of the dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) provide an insight into the ways in which the past becomes re-actualized in light of the contestations towards democracy, and how it demonizes and praises social actors that stand in between the discourse of the military and the vindication of human rights, thus giving way to a struggle for possible narratives of the future. In this sense, the narratives of democracy and Nunca más, essential to the evocation of state terrorism, are no longer immutable and instead are mobilized in the terrain of the struggles for hegemony and social order.
