This article is an outline comparison of two works for violin and piano in the sonata genre, representative for George Neaga’s componistic repertoire. The study focuses on examining issues both traditional and innovative relevant for Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano, composed in the early stage of Neaga’s creation and for Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano, that appeared in a difficult time of radical changings produced after the collapse of the Soviet system. Impressive in terms of sound, both opuses are quadripartite cyclical constructions contrasting by the character of music, suggested atmosphere, conceptual aspects and multiple means of musical expression.
