Information Literacy in Official Documents of Iran Public Libraries Foundation
Abstract
Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the place of Information Literacy factors in official documents of Iran public libraries foundation (IPLF) and to compare the results with IFLA Guidelines on Information Literacy. Methodology: This is a qualitative research based on the theoretical analyses. The research population includes eight main official documents of IPLF as well as IFLA guidelines on Information Literacy. Data analysis was conducted using the conventional qualitative content analysis method performed by NVivo software, and a checklist based on the Gal's technique. Findings: A total of 44 concepts related to information literacy components were identified which were categorized into five main categories including, education, research, computer literacy, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. The concepts related to “information literacy education” have received most attention in the official documents, and the 5-year strategic plan document had the largest number of concepts and themes related to IFLA's information literacy components. Despite the importance of information literacy in public libraries, the constructive role of these skills in the official documents as well as in empowering the audience have not received adequate attention. Originality/value: The results of this analysis can provide a major context for serious and more explicit consideration of information literacy components in the official documents of Iran Public Libraries Foundation (IPLF) in order to formulate and implement continuous programs of information literacy training for audiences of the Iranian public libraries.
