Objective: To know the milk donors profile of Anápolis – GO, such as the exclusive breastfeeding duration and the reasons of its early interruption, when occurred. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional and analytical study was performed in two stages: the first one, quantitative, evaluated the socioeconomic and cultural profile and the exclusive breastfeeding rates by the analysis of medical records of the 113 milk donors’ children of a Human Milk Bank in 2014. The second one, qualitative, selected 15 of 32 mothers that early weaning was detected and they were applied semi structured interviews, analysed by the hermeneutical-dialectical methodology. Results: Most women are young, married, christian, educated, work outside home, have a family income is up to 3 minimum salaries and breastfed exclusively for six months. In cases of early interruption, the mothers claimed as causes the belief that their milk was weak, conscious decision or cultural influences. Conclusions: The breastfeeding promotion is recognized as a responsibility of all society, however, the effectiveness of actions favoring breastfeeding has been insufficient. This research showed the positive impact of the studied institution in breastfeeding promotion, demonstrating that almost all women breastfed exclusively of predominantly. In conclusion, easier access to health care and ongoing support are essential for proper promotion of breastfeeding.
