The objective of this study is to verify the impact of indebtedness on the levels of delinquency and over-indebtedness of Brazilian families from 2010 to 2017, through a sample researched in the populations of the Brazilian capitals and the Federal District. Due to the different forms of payment together with the extended deadlines for discharge of accounts, the use of credit cards becomes a facilitator for indebtedness, since people often act irrationally, according to the postulates of behavioral finance. The paper is justified due to the importance of the subject debt, since its repercussion raises social concern. In addition, the study has an innovative character, because correlate the impact of indebtedness on delinquency and over-indebtedness. Thus, a regression was made based on the secondary data obtained through the PEIC. The results showed that the major cause of the debts of the analyzed families is carried out by the credit card, followed by the cards. In addition, it was verified that there is a positive relationship between indebtedness and default, and that higher default values cause higher amounts of over-indebtedness within Brazilian capitals.
