The present work aimed to estimate some genotypic and phenotypic parameters of eleven agronomic characters in five soybean populations in the generations F5 and F6, as well as recommending the more promising selection criterion. The populations were conducted using the family design with intercalated checks in the agricultural years 2003/04 and 2004/05, in sugar cane reform areas, in Jaboticabal, SP. The results showed that the averages of the populations were superior or very close to witnesses averages. For number of days for maturation, the selection for precocity and the occurrence of the Asian rust in the later F5 genotypes were responsible for cycle reduction. In relation to the other traits appropriate values were obtained for use as rotation crop with the sugarcane. The heritabilities estimates, broad and narrow sense, were close, indicating that most of the genetic variance is addictive, mainly for the secondary characters of the production. The selection is recommended among families, according to analysis of variance components, being verified that the populations productive capacity should be better, by imposition of selective process, with elimination of the inferior families.
