Purpose. The article deals with simile in the speech of middle-aged middle-class representatives. The authors analyze this stylistic technique, taking into account the sociolinguistic features of the speech. Methods. The authors use the sociolinguistic analysis method to study characters’ speech by means of sociolinguistic categories. Results. Based on the analysis, it is established that middle-aged middle-class women use five types of comparison and express them, using cinematic allusions, deformed idioms, stable phraseological units, marked as informal and slang. While copying the nobility, the speakers use latinisms, abstract words, refined vocabulary and poeticisms, mixing stylistically low and lofty lexical units in a single utterance. Practical implications. The results of this study can be used in theoretical and practical courses on intercultural communication, stylistics, translation and semiotics.
