The Tutor's Role in Higher Education
Abstract
The teacher acts as the tutor of students since he both, guides and accompanies their training. Nevertheless, understanding how tutors perform this function varies depending on the university model. We conducted a literature review that presents the historical background of tutoring in higher education and systematizes the different definitions that there have been elaborated. This research highlights the figure of the teacher-tutor and also presents the contribution of approaching tutoring as a way for the formation and development of research skills. The theoretical analysis allowed identifying tutoring as an inherent element of teaching, which involves the continuous and direct contact between the tutor and the student, thus promoting personalized learning aiming at a critical, scientific and humanistic training.
