Ethos et style du traducteur. Le cas de Jaccottet traducteur de Leopardi
Abstract
In this study, we present a methodology for analyzing the ethos of a poetry translator using a case study of Phillippe Jaccottet’s translation of Leopardi, in D’une lyre à cinq cordes. The translator’s ethos is approached through the notion of "translational reenunciation margin", a set of marks of the reenunciator’s (translator’s) presence in his (re)utterance, in the translated text and its surrounding context. In Jaccottet’s case, we observe a tension between the stated ethos of transparency and simplicity, and the shown ethos of originality. To analyze this tension, we focus on three key areas: signature zones, which represent the dual authorship of the translated text; ethos in the translationql peritext; ethos shown in the translation of "L’Infinito", through two salient stylistic elements: the music of the verses and the lexicon.
