Based on a discussion of the book ICT and the professions in higher education (TIC et métiers de l’enseignement supérieur) (Barbot Massou, 2011) and ongoing research, this article examines the strained relationship, in French universities, between designers and users of digital tools as well as between policy makers and policy implementers. To promote the dialogue between them, the article suggests to study and take into account the diversity of « belief systems » (eco-managerial, technophile, educational, professional, social and technophobe) and reconsider the scientific framings and categories suggested by previous research on information and communication technology in higher education and research (ICTHER). It jointly examins the three structural dimensions of the field (e-training, e-research, e-governance), the variety of tools used inside and outside the university and the « digital disciplinarity » produced by the increased differentiation between scientific disciplines in the digital age.
