Small islands in the Caribbean face several disadvantages due to insularity. Islands obtaining the best social and economic results are those who are specialized in tertiary sector, especially tourism. Tourism is a vital source of income for many small islands. However, this economic sector is highly cyclical and competitive in the Caribbean. Moreover, several ecological and economic factors tend to limit the capacity for tourism to promote economic growth, especially in the French West Indies.
