Rodízio System: Results from a Practice Perspective through an Experimental Procedure with Pianists
Abstract
This paper presents the research results of applying an experimental procedure involving piano students with the purpose of obtaining data on the use of a practice planning and organization system called Rodizio [alternation] (PÓVOAS, 2017, 2015). The repertory for Rodízio is previously analyzed and distributed into work units (WU) that are delimited according to the musical and technical material and organized into training sheets (TS). A WU corresponds to a portion of musical content or training session. The procedure consisted of applying rodizío during the preparation of a performance of Canhoto (1943) for solo piano by Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988). Initially, the process was practiced by one of the researchers as a pilot study to guide and support the development of the protocol to be applied to the pianists of the experimental and control subject groups (EG and CG). In this study, audio assessment data of the piano performance conducted by recognized and experienced professionals in the field demonstrated that Rodizio helps the performer improve his/her overall conception of the piece, thereby providing greater clarity and expressiveness during performance when compared to subjects that did not practice with rodizio. This result was possible since the work was distributed into training sessions which helps the pianist pay more attention to the details of each piece, especially the more complex pieces, in function of the priority resource. The data obtained from this experimental and theoretical work can open further investigation into instrumental practice.
