Experimental Film Between Art and Tehnology

Abstract

The industry of experimental film is a current topic – an industry that is relatively small and marginalized compared to the industry of commercial film – supported by a dedicated community of artists and filmmakers that continue to produce and promote experimental films, both in digital format and analog format. This work introduces the concept of “Experimental Film between Art and Technology” and over the course of cinema history there were a series of artistic movements that promoted the experimental Film, such as the German expressionism, dadaism and surrealism. The advancement of technology and the democratization of access to filming equipment and post-production allow an ever-increasing number of artists and filmmakers to express their vision through experimental film. The purpose of this work is to launch a provocative discussion regarding the industry of experimental film, where technology is often used as an instrument for creating new visual and auditory experiences for the public. These two main areas of interest are presented based on a recent expertise of specialized literature – the relation between art and technology in experimental film. Moreover, technology is a key component to experimental film, allowing the directors to create new and innovative visual and auditory experiences. On the other hand, experimental filmmakers often use technology in unconventional ways, ignoring mass cinematic conventions to create something truly unique and artistic. Experimental film exists at the intersection of art and technology, pushing the borders of both fields to create something new and exciting. This work is based on a significant study of specialized literature, and it explores the areas of art and technology that seem disjointed, bringing to the forefront points that can be important for both theoreticians, and for industry professionals.
