Abstract
The iconography of the cross as a visual materialization of the death of Christ in order to save mankind is sometimes shown in representations of the Annunciation of Christ. It serves to show that His fate had already been sealed. The cross appears either as a crucifix, usually between the angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary, or being carried by Christ Child, who is occasionally pictured being projected towards Mary. This paper analyzes the symbol of the cross in some annunciations created between the 14th and 15th centuries and the theological grounds for this iconography.
