The article discloses an approach to forming the underlying data set for the geoinformation mapping land resources of Chernivtsi region. For this purpose the authors of the present work analyzed the existing information sources of spatial data, made conclusion on their appropriate provision level and highlighted the main and secondary sources. The current article also provides a substantiation of the basic elements of the underlying data set regional spatial data infrastructure (SDI), which include: coordinate system, administrative boundaries, populated places, transport network, topography, hydrography, land cover, land use, geographical names. For each element of core data set SDI is identified potential sources for data support as well as the main methods of data processing.
