This article deals with the ideas and projects of millenarist Christians in Palestine in the 19th century which in Europe and North America was characterized by a renewed interest for the Holy Land. Millenarist ideas about the “Second Coming” of Christ and his thousand-year reign on earth, believed to depend on the restoration of the Jews to the land of prophecy and their conversion to Christianity, were widespread among members of some Protestant and Anglican churches. This article attempts to show how these ideas shaped reality in the particular case of the Euro-American settlement in the valley of Artas near Bethlehem.
