This article aims to understand the conditions of renewal of a CGT trade-union in a psychiatric hospital, base on the case of the general secretary. It gives an understanding of the practices implemented by this leader to ensure organizational continuity while many militants are aging and approaching retirement age. The secretary must find and train a new generation, while at the same time transmitting a set of practices based on agonistic and politicized principles that do not always meet the expectations of union members, who are sometimes willing to become more involved in the CGT. The article finally sheds ight on the dynamics of recompositions of a union form strongly anchored in the workplace, as well as on the practices deployed by the figure of the union secretary, which has been little studied in the literature until now.
