This article studies rural life in Galicia in the Middle Ages as a framework for class conflict. Social antagonism was the common chord that linked peasant unrest with the defiance of the lordly regime by the rural brotherhoods during the revolt of the Irmandiños. However, the underlying interests were not the same. On the one hand, the brotherhoods sought legal recognition, while the peasants, on the other hand, wanted social change and the abolition of the feudal system.
