How Journals Reflected on Theater in Transylvania Until 1944 In Transylvania where the social-political conditions were a stepping stone for the Romanian population, the press played a crucial role in the struggle for national emancipation and cultural unity of Transylvanian Romanians. Unlike other areas where the Transylvanian press has a certain ascendancy over the press in the Principalities, in the theater sector things are just the opposite. While in the Romanian Country, the founder of the literary press Ion Heliade Rădulescu initiated and the first Romanian theater magazine, namely "The Gazette of the National Theater" (1835-1836), followed shortly by a specialized newspaper in Moldova, called "Theater" (Iași1864), in Transylvania the theatrical movement in the second half of the 19th century will be under the sign of enthusiasm and sporadic local initiatives.
