This work aims to reflect on the teaching and learning requirements of reading materialized in the Essential Learning (EL) referring to 2st Year of the 1st Cycle of the Portuguese Teaching System. The EL are defined as a Common Curricular Denominator for all students in Portuguese territory and are in convergence with the Profile of the Students at Exit of Compulsory Schooling.
