This research reports a quantitative, transversal research project which was conducted in the urban district of "Las Palmas ", in the canton of Milagro, Guayas province from June 2010 to February 2011. The aim was to assess the nutritional status and diagnose intestinal parasitic diseases that affect children aged 2 to 13. Their weight and height according to age and nutritional status were assessed and microscopic stool examinations were performed. The conditions were evaluated with regard to the spreading of parasitosis, taking into account socio-economic status, consumption of non-drinking water and lack of knowledge of measures to prevent these types of illnesses. The results showed that 88.3 % of the child population have intestinal parasites and 64.4 %, is affected by protozoa. It was established that 19.2 % of children presented percentiles < p3 relative to normal weight for their age and 28.9 % of them showed percentiles < p3 with respect to size for their age. This situation alters their growth and development, making them more vulnerable to disease and affecting their quality of life.
