The reformed physician Jacob Spon is one of the bigger French antiques’ lovers of the XVIIth century. Fascinated by the architecture, the sculpture and the medals, more than by the other arts, the admirer of the Antiquity, he shares his discoveries within the Republic of Letters. The art, for him, has to raise to the knowledge and to the truth. That is why it can be of use to the religious controversy. For that purpose, he defines and uses a new empirical method, by making of the archaeology a practical science.
