New Inscriptions from Stratonikeia and Its Territory

Abstract

The article comprises 37 new inscriptions from Stratonikeia in Caria and its territory. Of historical interest is inscription no. 15, an offering in which Divus Caesar is mentioned. Three roof tiles from the North Stoa in Lagina bear the name of the goddess Hekate (no. 13. The statue base no. 12 reveals that the title «archineokoros» was also used in Stratonikeia. Some names like Argiadas (no. 18) show Rhodian infl uence in the territory. The feminine name Dymene (no. 34 has hitherto not been attested. The funerary stele no. 9 belongs to a gladiator. In no. 25 a gardener is mentioned. The couple Irene and Nikolaos mentioned on funerary stele no. 32 may have been Christians. Further Christian inscriptions are nos. 26, 31 and 37.
