Traumatic events in the emergency services of different hospitals are one of the most frequent reasons for consultation. The epidemiological profile in Colombia is largely dominated by trauma and accidents. Open fractures are one of the most common problems and soft tissue damage a difficult condition to treat. According with the defect different options have been used, primary close, skin grafts, muscle flaps etc. Recently, the Negative Pressure System (NPS) have been reported as an effective option for severe open fractures. The aim of this paper is to present a case using the NPS by Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) in the treatment of a patient with open tibial fracture and to review the literature about the use of this method in orthopedic trauma.
