Editorial: Volume 4

Abstract

We are delighted to share with you the fourth volume of The International Journal of Young Adult Literature and to celebrate the ever-growing and rich development of YA Studies. Young adult literature plays a vital role in society by providing a platform for many adolescents to make connections, explore new ideas and perspectives, and try to make sense of the world around them. The wide range of articles and reviews in this issue share a deep commitment to examining and affirming the unique and emancipatory potential and power of YA literature for honouring the lives of all young people and exploring complexities of gender, language, diversity, power, representation, and nationhood. At the same time, we acknowledge that YA does not serve all young people equally and that rigorous scholarly criticism can, and must, bring awareness to which voices are missing and tackle some of the prevailing and insidious norms that permeate our field.
