The article summarizes the history of radio education programs for the Shuar people. The main objective is to highlight the role of the exiles from former Czechoslovakia, especially the role of Juan Šutka. The idea of educational radio for the Shuar in South-eastern Ecuador emerged in the late 1960's, due to the difficult access to many of their communities. This educational medium proved to be highly efficient, contributing to the eradication of illiteracy. It also enabled the Shuar children to receive their education at home instead of them having to move to boarding schools. The radio programs were organized by the Salesian Society; a small but significant number of Czech and Slovak exiles participated in their management and provided technical support.
