I.A. Bunin and M.A. Voloshin: On the history of relationships

Abstract

In the article it is attempted to trace the history of relationships of I.A. Bunin and M.A. Voloshin from the beginning of their acquaintance in the 1900s to the times of the Civil War. The work presents a mutual evaluation of the creativity of both poets, disagreement over the new government, that are reflected in Vera Nikolaevna’s notebooks and Bunin’s memories. Also there are possible reasons for the sharp tone of Bunin, who didn’t have such a bad opinion of Voloshin, in his necrologue to the poet. The article not only sheds light on the history of the relationship between the two poets, but it illustrates contradictory and ambiguous assessments of the revolution, the Civil War and the French interventionists among the Russian intelligentsia.
