This article analyzes the chief characteristics of printing in the northeastern province of Pernambuco in Brazil in the nineteenth century as well as its role in disseminating news and opinions on political and social transformations in the period. It explores material conditions, labour and the operational characteristics of printing. The period considered is between 1815 when the first printing press was brought to the province, and 1824 when there were already several periodicals published in the region and a strong oppositional movement, the Confederation of the Equator, which challenged the established power in Rio de Janeiro using newspapers as an important tool in transmitting their ideas.
