This article aims to show that from a diachronic or synchronic point of view, in Romance languages, especially Italian, diphthongs, complementary phenomenon of the intensity stress and geminates, are involved in the construction of the word with a demarcating function. They separate the components of the word when it is necessary for the proper conduct of the construction of meaning.
