This article presents theoretical and empirical debates regarding families and transversalities considering gender and generations. This article is based on a research held in a popular neighborhood in Belém in the State of Pará. The social transformations of recent decades reveal the composition of family arrangements in the context of Brazilian cities. Thus, several generations live together in the household space as extended families. Special attention should be given to the role of grandparents within the families regarding the provision, transmission of material goods and the caring of grandchildren. On the basis of family relations, sharing material goods as well as caring are considered symbolic practices within the context of social obligations of parents and social networks.
