Called by the well-known composer M. Kopytman "the handbook of polyphony", S. Buzila’s Sonata for flute and piano reveals various polyphonic methods and techniques which the author masterly combines with the structure of the traditional sonata cycle and the language elements taken from the national folklore thesaurus. The article draws attention to the overall composition of the cycle and of each part, highlighting Buzilă’s specific style features and the compositional writing. The authors examine various contrapuntal methods used by the composer and their treatment in the context of the specific forms of the sonata genre.
