A new analysis of the cognitive nature of sociology of religion is the main theme of the present article. The author of this paper also makes a comparison between cognitive - theological nature of religious sociology while giving a description of them. He presents a critical review of the views of the pioneers of classical studies of religion like Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel and recent traditions in cultural studies of religion such as composite studies of religion, cultural studies of religion, media studies of religion and virtual studies of religion. The most discussed current issues in the sociology of intellectual and religious traditions and a wide range of social, epistemological, theological approaches to religion such as the sociology of religion to social theology, theological sociology, sociological theology and phenomenological sociology of religion were also critically reviewed in the present research study.
