THE METABOLIC SYNDROM IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS – RISK FACTOR FOR ADULT CARDIOVASCULARY DISEASES
Abstract
Atherosclerosis – the silent killer – is the first cause of death for adults worldwide. In more and more cases the atherosclerotic lesions begin to appear at very early ages, due to the epidemic increase of child obesity, its complications and atherogenic comorbidities. The metabolic syndrome (MS) – a concept recently accepted in pediatrics – is an accumulation of morbid states, due to or associated with obesity, which represent cardiovasculary risk factors through their proven atherogenicity. The earliest possible identification of pacients with MS allows an efficient monitoring and sanctioning of cardiovasculary risk factors, with a chance to reduce morbidity and mortality at young ages.
