“Hija de la España caballeresca”: golden age literary canon, nation and gender in nineteenth-century women's magazines (1858-1863)
Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the construction of the golden literary canon in the nineteenthcentury periodical press, aimed at the female public, during the “gobierno largo” of Leopoldo O'Donnell (1858-1863). First, we will outline the repertoire of the golden authors cited in these magazines to evaluate the impact of their works and the configuration of their authorial images during these years. Secondly, we will examine the values associated with these writers. This will enable us to ascertain, whether the preference for certain golden authors was linked to positive or negative value judgments or whether it was related to certain models of behavior, whether masculine or feminine. Finally, we will delve into the connection between golden literature and the normative femininity of the time.
