This article presents the four most outstanding contemporary tendencies in the teaching of foreign languages. The work characterizes from a philosophical, linguistic, psychological, and pedagogical point of view each tendency. In each tendency, it is also included the methods and approaches which represent it. Finally, a critical analysis of the shortcomings of each tendency is made.
